Daily CHUM Stand Up Paddle Report January 21

Today’s Cold Stroke Classic Weather: We were worried about cold, but didn’t think about the wind. It’s going to be interesting. Basically, there is a cold front moving through at some point today. As the cold front gets closer, the winds will intensify out of the SW-S-SE. It’s 5:30am and it’s already 63 degrees out. It’s very comfortable. We have a slight chance of rain all day, but the rain shouldn’t really hit until 2. After 2, there could be thunderstorms, etc. it’ll reach 70+, so there’s no need for survival suits. If you fall in, it’ll be a shock, but it won’t be deadly.

Surf: Is there anything to ride after the event? Yes and no. It’s hard to tell how west the wind will be. The more west, the cleaner the surf. The more south, the more chop we can expect. The surf is building out of the south to about 4 feet at 6 seconds. It could get to chest high+.

Downwinder?: Holy crap yes. Let’s hope there are some fun downwind sections at the race. However, because it’s a loop, there is an upwind for every downwind section.

Tides: Low tide is at 11:53am today, so the tide will be going out at the start of the stand up paddle races. That means, it’ll be going against the wind for much of the course and will chop things up considerably in some spots.

Cold Stroke Classic: There are over 140 people registered as of 6 pm last night.
