It’s an SUP excursion of 17 miles around beautiful Sea island, GA. It’s about 6 to 7 hours duration.

Haaay, mon… you betta get roun’ da island before da world ends, mon!

Be a part of Whitecap SUP’s GOLDEN ISLES “Roun’ da Island Tour” SERIES

ROUN’ da ISLAND Series** – 2012 – The Sea Island Tour

It’s an SUP excursion of 17 miles around beautiful Sea island, GA. ANYBODY can do this! It’s about 6 to 7 hours duration. It’s and adventure, an accomplishment, a challenge perhaps. Get in at the beginning of the whole Golden Isles Roun’ da Island Series! This is Tour #1, the shortest of the Golden Isles Series — accessible to most anyone!!

The route begins with a launch from in front of the East Beach Surf Sailors boatyard on St Simons (at the Coastguard Station), then we paddle northward up the front of Sea island, turning west into the mouth of the Hampton River to Village Creek where we turn south and continue around the backside of Sea island, eventually landing back at our original starting point on East Beach of St Simons at the Surf Sailors boatyard.

This is NOT a race. Heck, it ain’t even a rush. We take our time, observe, and appreciate where we are along the way. Rest, refreshment, and lunch stops are in the scheduled estimated total time. It’s fun…and a way to see your world in a different way. (Maybe it’s time to see yourself in a different way, huh?) When we get back, it’s glory time at a cook out in the Surf Sailors lovely boat yard! Sit down—YES! — get a tall drink, talk about the day with your brothas and sistas.

Sound like something you want to be a part of! You ain’t got but this one life. Do it!

>> Cost is $30 (covers the tee-shirt, snacks, gas and tip for the on-call boat support, food for the after-cookout)
>> Displacement hull SUP’s (touring and race boards) are NOT required; but bigger, floaty boards are a good idea if it’s a planning hull.
>> Whitecap may be able to provide you a board, if needed. Call us early.
>> We will have boat support, not accompanying us but on-call, in case of emergency or threatening weather.
>> There are “bail out” points at the 5 mile and 12 mile point, if you feel it necessary to abandon the tour.

**This event is the re-launching – a new beginning, if you will, of the entire GOLDEN ISLES “Roun’ da Island” Series. Future tours, taking place over the next couple of years, will include one each of the Golden Isles. After this Spring’s Sea Island Tour of 17 miles, we will do Jekyll Island at 18 miles, then Little St Simons at 26 miles, then St Simons Island at 36 miles, and concluding with the big kahuna of Golden Isles – Cumberland at 45.6 miles. The next tour in the Series, after Sea Island, may possibly be later in 2012 or it may be in early 2013. We’ll keep you informed, for sure. Be a part of “the big picture”, as they say – do the whole Series, baby!

NEW! This Year TEAM RELAY

Bring Your Best

The Wrightsville Beach Biathlon is like no other event on the East Coast. Why? Because it’s the only one of it’s kind to replace the swim portion with Standup Paddleboard. This year, we’re changing things up a bit and we want you to get involved. When the WBB was conceived, it was all about the celebration of community. So by offering special corporate sponsorship’s, we invite you to gather your staff & gather your fellow athletes–family, friends & neighbors (Ringers are welcome!) to wear your logo proudly in a friendly beach challenge. This is your chance to shine! Relay Teams will fight the flatwater around Money Island & the rushing wind pier to pier in a battle of guts, glory and honor. It’s all for the soon-to-be coveted Masonboro Trophy that will wear your logo until the 2013 winner is crowned the following year. The Trophy will be displayed in the Blockade Runner Beach Resort lobby following the race where it will be viewed by 70,000 guests who enter our doors each year.

“With the continued growth of stand-up paddle boarding there are a lot more people paddling in the harbors and waterways. Safety and etiquette have become much more critical. Since Dana Point is a Mecca for paddle sports, we wanted to have an event that’s message is about the importance of safety and paddling etiquette, especially in regards to local boat traffic”. “We also want to take the opportunity to demonstrate stewardship towards one of our favorite places to paddle, Dana Point Harbor, and keep it clean”, says surf legend Mickey Munoz.

After lunch, participants will be organized into the main event, “Luck of the Draw Relays”. Teams will race for the prestigious Mongoose Cup trophy. Each eliteMongoose Cup Safety Paddler will be required to pick from the bucket names of three participant paddlers to complete their (4) person teams.

Mongoose Cup Safety Paddlers are elite level watermen & women (legends & champions of the sport) who all share a great friendship and association with the event icon Mickey Munoz. The start and finish for the flat-water relay race will be at Baby Beach. To be eligible for the Mongoose Cup teams must race 12’6” & under SUP boards.

Someone bought a Jimmy Lewis SUP owned by Jimmy Buffett at a charity auction to help raise money for the Everglades Foundation.

PALM BEACH, Florida – When John and Bari Denney left Maui to open Jupiter Paddleboarding in South Florida a few years ago, they had no idea how the sport would grow and what impact they would have. The blue water and wealthy inhabitants of Palm Beach helped make them one of the largest SUP retailers in the country. To match their clientele, the Denney’s chose legendary shaper and friend from Maui, Jimmy Lewis to supply their boards. One of their customers, Jimmy Buffett, owns a Jimmy Lewis paddle board and is also involved with the Everglades Foundation. This charity works to increase awareness and conservation of the wetlands and natural sources of water in South Florida.

Jupiter Paddleboarding and Jimmy Lewis offered to donate a Stand Up Paddleboard to be auctioned at the annual gala of the Everglades Foundation. The auction was held this past Friday at the famous Palm Beach Breakers Hotel. Attendees included Kelly Slater, Jack Nicklaus, Joe Scarborough, and Dave Mathews. The package to be auctioned included a 10’6 Jimmy Lewis Cruise Control SUP, a Jimmy Lewis Kanaha Paddle designed by Quickblade, a Jimmy Lewis board bag, and an everglades eco-tour and paddle session with Jupiter Paddleboarding.

With over 500 people in the room, the price went up quickly. Bids were cast by raising a glow stick in the audience. When the gavel fell the board had been sold for $27,500 to an unknown bidder. The funds will go toward the Everglades Foundation.
