Tell me more about the tandem SUPs and the “QUADNUNDRUM”

MY WIFE, BARRIE AND I HAVE BEEN PADDLING AN 18′ TANDEM FOR 3 YEARS.  WE FIND THAT IT IS PERFECT FOR A COUPLE BECAUSE IN MOST CASES,  THE GUY ALWAYS HAS TO WAIT FOR HIS WIFE WHEN THEY PADDLE TOGETHER.  SHE DOES LIKE TO PADDLE ON HER OWN WITH THE GIRLS, BUT SHE LIKES TO PADDLE WITH ME ON THE TANDEM BECAUSE WE GO SO FAST.  ALSO, I AM ACTUALLY FASTER ON THE TANDEM WITH HER THAN I AM ON A 14′ BOARD BY MYSELF BECAUSE OF THE EFFICIENCY OF THE TWO PADDLES ON A SINGLE HULL.  LAST YEAR WE DISCOVERED THAT WE COULD INVITE ANOTHER GIRL ALONG ON THE TANDEM AND DO A THREESOME.  THE SPEED SEEMS TO REMAIN ABOUT THE SAME.  WE TRIED COMBINING TWO COUPLES BUT FOUND THAT WE JUST OVER LOADED IT, SO I DECIDED TO MAKE A 21′ BOARD FOR 4 PEOPLE.  IT HAS THE SAME LENGTH TO WIDTH RATIO AS OUR 18′, SO I’M HOPING THE SPEED WILL BE THE SAME OR FASTER.

THE BOARD HAS BEEN SHAPED FOR TWO WEEKS, BUT WE ARE DOING SO MANY CUSTOM RACE BOARDS FOR CUSTOMERS THAT I HAVE HAD TO SET IT ASIDE UNTIL WE ARE CAUGHT UP.  NEXT WEEK LOOKS CLEAR FOR LAMINATION, SO THE BOARD SHOULD BE DONE IN TWO WEEKS.
Is the QUADNUNDRUM some kind of record?
21′ IS NOT ANY KIND OF RECORD FOR SUP OR SURFBOARDS.  I THINK THAT ROB ROJAS HAS A 21′ SINGLE.  WHAT IS NOVEL IS THE IDEA OF MULTIPLE PADDLERS.

Do you see paddling tandem boards as the hot summer date of 2011?
IT’S WEIRD HOW TANDEM IN ALL SPORTS IS SUCH A FRINGE ELEMENT.  EVERYONE SEEMS TO GET MARRIED, BUT IN SPORTS LIKE CYCLING, OC2, SURFING, SUP,   EVERYTHING, SO FEW PEOPLE DO IT TANDEM.  I HAVE FOUND THAT EVERY GIRL WHO HAS PADDLED ON THE TANDEM SUP, LOVES IT.  IT SEEMS LIKE THE GUYS ARE INTIMIDATED BY THE RESPONSIBILITY OF BEING “CAPTAIN” OF THE SHIP.  THAT’S THE ONLY EXCUSE SINCE THE COST OF A TANDEM IS NO MORE THAN THE SAME LENGTH SINGLE BOARD.

Do you have any built-in shark repellants for San Onofre, or have Fluffy and Mr. Nibbles lost their taste for SUPs? OVER THE LAST 8 YEARS THE NUMBER OF SHARKS AT SAN ‘O HAS INCREASED, BUT FOR SOME STRANGE REASON,  THERE ARE VERY FEW SHARKS THIS YEAR.

Are you considering the SEA NYC race? 28 miles around the city? That would be something to witness.
HUM, THAT SOUNDS INTERESTING LIKE THE RACE IN NAPLES ITALY THIS SUMMER.  THE PROBLEM IS THAT IN EVERY REGION, THERE ARE SO MANY LOCAL RACES, THAT YOU REALLY DON’T NEED TO TRAVEL TO GET YOUR FILL.  IN SO. CA.  THERE IS A RACE SOMEWHERE EVERY SINGLE WEEK.  WE WOULD LOVE TO GO BACK EAST MORE OFTEN, WE ARE JUST SO BUSY WORKING AND DOING THE RACES HERE.

Do you see the longer boards going to distance or have you seen some movement toward a sprint series or sprint racing? Narrow and fast?
THERE IS SOME EXCITEMENT FROM THE OLYMPIC TRIALS SPRINT RACES IN SAN DIEGO LAST MONTH.  AS A RESULT, I AM SHAPING A FEW 14′ X 26″ SPRINT BOARDS.  GROWTH IN THIS AREA DEPENDS ON LOCAL ORGANIZATION PUTTING ON SPRINT RACES.  I WOULD THINK THAT WITH THE BEAUTIFUL INLAND WATERWAYS ON THE EAST COAST THAT 18′ DISTANCE BOARDS WOULD BECOME MORE POPULAR WHETHER FOR RACING OR TOURING.

What shapes are leading the charge as far as volume? Race, Surf? stock or 14 or unlimited?
RACE:  NARROW= FAST, BUT IT HAS TO BE STABLE, SO WE ARE DOING DEEP COCKPITS WITH DRAIN PIPES TO MAINTAIN STABILITY.
SURF:  THE GOOD GUYS ARE GETTING MORE RESPONSIVE BOARDS AND SURFING A MODIFIED SHORT BOARD STYLE.  THE BOARDS ARE FROM 7’6″ TO 9′ AND ON AVERAGE 28″ WIDE AND 4.25″ THICK.  THE RAILS AND TAILS ARE TAPERED LIKE GIANT SHORT BOARDS.  EVEN THE AVERAGE GUYS ARE SURFING ON 10′ AND 10’6″ SURF MODELS.

STOCK , 14′ OR UNLIMITED:  GUYS UNDER 200 LB. WHO ARE SERIOUS RACERS ARE GOING 12’6 BECAUSE IT IS THE MOST COMPETITIVE CLASS, BUT GUYS OVER 200 LB FIND THAT THEY ARE NOT COMPETITIVE ON A 12’6″  SO THEY PREFER 14′ AND THAT CLASS IS GROWING.  IT SEEMS LIKE THE OLDER VETERAN PADDLERS PREFER THE UNLIMITED CLASS.  MAYBE THESE ARE ALSO THE GUYS WHO CAN AFFORD THE LONGER BOARDS.

How do Slater’s boards differ from the TL Carvers?
THE TOMMY LLOY BOARDS ARE LIKE XL. SHORT BOARDS AND EXCEL IN WAVES UP TO AROUND 8′.  SLATER RIDES A GUNNY 9’6″ BOARD IN BIGGER HAWAIIAN WAVES, BUT HAS A MORE FULL NOSED MODEL FOR ALL AROUND SURFING IN SMALLER WAVES.

Who’s carrying your SUPs on the East Coast? Stand Up Annapolis and who else?
ACTUALLY, ONLY SUP ANNAPOLIS.  SINCE WE MAKE ONLY HAND SHAPED CUSTOM STYLE BOARDS, IT IS HARD TO COMPETE WITH THE COST OF CHINESE MADE BOARDS.  WE HAVE SUCH A STRONG RETAIL BUSINESS LOCALLY THAT WE DON’T HAVE TO GO TO THE TRADE SHOWS SO WE KIND OF LAG IN OUR WHOLESALE PROMOTION AND WE DON’T ACCUMULATE A LOT OF DEALERS.

WE HAVE DONE A FEW RACES, BUT IT IS MOSTLY JUST FOR  VERY FUN, FAST, BUT SOCIAL  PADDLING WITH OUR FRIENDS.  THE BOYS ARE CONSIDERING DOING SOME OF THE LONG DISTANCE STYLE RACES ON IT IF WE CAN GET THREE OR FOUR GUYS TO ALL WORK TOGETHER AS ONE HARMONIOUS PADDLING ORGANISM.

Will the tandems be available to the general public?
I WILL BE MAKING A NEW 18′ TANDEM VERY SOON SO MY CURRENT TANDEM WILL BE FOR SALE FOR AROUND $2600.
