One of the really great gear finds at the Surf Expo was Restube. This is a twist on the belt PFD in that it trails behind you on a 5-foot lead—like an inflatable lifeguard rescue can.

You inflate it in the same way that you would inflate a typical waist PFD with a CO2 cartridge by pulling the rip cord. You can either hug it for floatation, maybe stuff it in your shirt if you are too tired to hug it. You can wave it to attract attention. Mostly, it’s out of the way of your arms and torso when you want to swim. I can see this as a great lifesaving tool and a wonderful backup.

It’s small and convenient. The straps could be more heavy-duty, but they’ve done a ton of testing and are going through the necessary steps to be considered for the USCG approval. JUST TO BE CLEAR: Restube is NOT USCG approved, so don’t think this will replace your waist pfd.

Features:

  • Wear it horizontal & vertical
  • 25mm belt & replaceable CO2
  • Key pocket
  • Trigger = whistle

I can see this for surfers who might get caught on deep hold-downs. This would be great for triathletes and distance swimmers who need a backup in case of cramps, injury or accidents. Lifeguards can inflate this when they reach someone in need of help without towing any weight or as a second or third floatation backup for reaching multiple people, perhaps in a rip current.

It’s just so small and useful, I can see it being anywhere where you would need that extra safety insurance.
