One of the best races in support of a local charity goes off today from Maliko Gultch on Maui – the 10-mile Paddle Imua Presented by Bluesmiths. Held the weekend after the larger Olukai, Paddle Imua supports Imua Family Services, an island non-profit that helps families in need. The money raised by the event sends kids to Camp Imua, “a week-long recreational camp experience for special needs children ages 6-16 years. Paddle Imua brings the ocean sports community together to celebrate the lives of special needs children by embracing our connection to the ocean.” And you feel that connection at the luau and kids relay afterward. It’s truly a great event.
Conditions do not appear as gnarly as last weekend, when the Olukai race was delayed a day and then beset with 20-foot waves at the finish. However, the wind is forecast to be light and more from the North than usual. Both races has experienced “off” conditions. Morning of, skies appear to be clear though, and that’s a good sign.
Best of luck to everyone racing today!
