Every year,WB Surf Camp and Sea Turtle Camp donates a portion of every campers tuition to the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center. This year, they donated $22,535 to the center. That kind of money will go so far to help sick and injured sea turtles in North Carolina. This was such a wonderful thing to find on my timeline this am.
Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center
The Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center is one of those magical islands where people bring sea turtles who are sick or injured for much-needed medical attention and care. I was introduced to the center about 8 years ago, when we rescued a 70 lb loggerhead in Bank’s Channel. She had been caught in a gill net and aspirated, nearly starved and then was cut free and set adrift. I was able to get her on my padleboard and make my way to the Coast Guard Station. They contacted the center for a pickup and she was off to the hospital, covered in wet towels in the back of a pickup truck. They named her Rain and sent me regular updates. Rain lasted a few weeks and looked to be making progress when we lost her. The genuine care, love and respect the staff at the rescue and rehabilitation center showed her brings tears to my eyes to this day. I named my surfski Rain in her honor.
Since then, I’ve kept in contact with the hospital and attended the turtle releases. If you’ve never seen a turtle release, I highly recommend it. It is one of those tears-of-joy moments when you see green turtle, after Loggerhead, after Kemp’s Ridley being returned to the ocean, swimming like little rockets out through the surf. They simply do amazing work.
WB Surf Camp
We can’t recommend the WB Surf Camp highly enough. I learned to surf in WB Surf Camp years ago and my daughter continued the tradition this past summer. Their respect for the ocean is baked into their camps. Coaches teach people of all ages how to surf safely and to have fun while respecting surf etiquette and our natural environment. The whole staff carries the message of stoke and respect to campers. When I see them giving back, it just reinforces all the preachings delivered during each of their camps. In the words of my 7-year old daughter, “it makes my heart happy.”

“In all of our programs our mission includes creating a love and respect for the ocean and all of its inhabitants. Sea Turtles uniquely connect the land and the sea. The Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center has a special place in our hearts and the hearts of each camper & counselor… a portion of every campers tuition at WB Surf Camp and Sea Turtle Camp goes towards our annual donation to this incredible organization. We are so happy and proud to be able to present this check to Jean and her amazing volunteer staff. To date… through the support of our clients, we have been able to contribute $150,000. We look forward to working hard to make 2019 even better than 2018 ❤️ We love you Jean! ❤️”
