OluKai Lowcountry Boil Paddle Battle.

The LowCountry Boil is cancelled this year due to mandatory evacuations of Beaufort County, SC in advance of Hurricane Dorian. As disappointing as this announcement may be, it’s great that they got the word out as soon as possible considering the size and strength of Hurricane Dorian.

Yesterday, Race Director John Batson posted the following on facebook:

“Hello racers,
First I want to thank you so much for registering for the OluKai Lowcountry Boil Paddle Battle. We had 90 registered paddlers and I’m sure we would have broke 100 had this storm not developed. This is amazing for a first annual event.

It is with a heavy heart I have to cancel this race. Our governor has just issued a mandatory evacuation of Beaufort County starting tomorrow at noon. Unfortunately we have had to deal with this in prior years and there is always tremendous uncertainty with the storm and how long the evacuation will last. It is also very difficult on the roads when residents are re-entering the evacuated zones. This is not a time to be traveling to a paddle race.

If something were to miraculously change with the storm or the evacuation I will notify you all ASAP.

Damn, this sucks. Be safe everyone.

Yours in health, John”

First priority: be safe, make good decisions. Hurricane prep is such a personal, emotional, —vital thing to address early and often when faced with the possibility of an event like Dorian.

Next year, we’ll just have to make sure we hit 200 people in the Second Inaugural OluKai Lowcountry Boil Paddle Battle.
